Our Bodies Dance Rebellion

of each who has ever felt as though their soul was not at home
for each who has ever raised a middle finger to the status quo
to stereotypes and racism and harassment and intolerance
herein that presence lies
our bodies dance rebellion in the face of such oppression

And it seems as if these bodies are moving in slow motion
with certainty and freedom, our movement is the pulsing heart
of this, our disgraced city
but we claim our crowns of sweat with every inch of space we own
our bodies dance rebellion in the wake of the waking self

in thus, we are most holy; in this, we are most human.
And one can taste the rawness here: the outpouring of every tear
and the reclamation of our voices, as we shout with swinging hips
"This piece of earth is mine!"
our bodies dance rebellion in the truth of feeling room to breath

So leave us to our other church, let our own freedom falter not
leave to let the internal outpour, rip through these bodies
don't touch our holy rite to feel the goodness of aliveness
and the holiness of dancing, our spirit crawling forth through these twitching muscles
and ascending, ascending to cry that we are here. And we are holy. And we deserve this earth as much as you.
and our bodies dance rebellion for every time you tried to stomp us out
our bodies dance rebellion
